Lockdown 132

Lockdown Day 132 - 5 August 2020
Today was to be the start of our 4 days in Kgalagadi. Apart from the ocean, this is one of my most favourite places to be. It has a lot in common with Namibia's nothingness.  The red Kalahari sand dunes host some of the most impressive wildlife species in the country among which are the Kalahari lions. With their huge manes and slightly bulkier build than those to be seen in other parks, they make a lasting impression on anyone who encounters them.

I specifically recall two incidents I will never forget. The first was a few years ago when we stayed at Mata Mata Camp on the river bed in a chalet. We woke one night to a lion roaring and grunting just a few metres away. The sound was so intense, it felt like someone was banging on my chest, much like when you sit close to those big speakers during a rock concert.

I felt the sound vibrate inside my body. And of course I could barely look through the window, for fear of the lion coming our way. My fear was of course completely unfounded as we were safely in a brick chalet surrounded with its own little electric fence. But at that moment in the dark of the night anything seemed possible.

The other incident was 2 years ago, when we were driving along the river bed between Kalahari Tent Camp and Urikaruus. We spotted a young leopard on a mission and decided to follow her as far as we could for as long as she was visible. At some point we realised she was on her way to a water point, so we drove ahead, parking close to the water, ready with cameras and lenses to film this stunning animal.

And she didn't disappoint. She came walking straight in our direction, first having to pass us before getting to the water.
My window was slightly open for my camera, and she stopped right in front of it, our eyes briefly locking onto each other. I felt deep shock and fear in those seconds, realising my vulnerability.

Paralysed with fear, I sank deeper into my seat, whispering to hubby to close the window. She kept on looking at me, and I knew she was small and agile enough to attempt the jump! Fortunately her thirst overtook her curiosity and she walked to the water. It was the same reaction as with the lion. My heart was in my throat and I could barely breathe.

Such are the animals of the Kalahari:  they silently witness the greatness of our Creator, and never ever disappoint. Just like God. His Creation is a witness of His greatness and He never ever disappoints. Not even once. He really has us firmly in His hand.
Tomorrow I will continue my Kalahari stories.
For now, Gbwy.
