Lockdown Day 738-3 April 2022
And so the much awaited Ironman Triathlon day arrived, with rain pelting down and extremely bad sea conditions.
The call was made to completely cancel all age group swims except the professional athletes, who did a very short swim of 700m instead of the usual 3.8km distance.
I decided to stay and watch the professionals do the swim and huddled under an umbrella at Indulge with other supporters.
Later, after going home for a while, I returned as the sun came out. Winter became summer in a matter of 30 minutes as I watched the full and half race athletes do their thing.
The gruelling race was still going strong when hubby arrived with the pooch. Most of the full race athletes had finished. We decided to take a stroll along the promenade directly next to the route where the half marathon athletes were still battling it out.
South African boy'tjie and 'Bay local Kyle Buckingham won the Mens' race, clocking in at 7h16m31s. Second and third places went to South Africans Bradley Weiss and Matt Trautman respectively.
Daniela Bleymehl won the Women's race in 3h11m41s, and Elena Illeditsch came second, both from Germany. South African Magda Nieuwoudt came in third. Well done to our South African athletes!
What a day. 4 Seasons in one day. I thank God for the wonderful rain and can't wait for rain reports from the Kouga dam tomorrow. God's got this.
